Baviaans Cycle Tour

Details & Itinerary

The Baviaans Cycle Tour is a multiday cycle tour in the Steytlerville District, Baviaans Region, Eastern Cape. The route is moderate on jeep track, dirt roads, district roads and some single track, plus the option to cycle to the Grootrivier Poort.

The Baviaans Region is set in the Karoo Midlands, featuring majestic mountains rising from rolling plains, with lush green valleys providing stark contrast. With stunning sunsets and clear, starry nights, the Baviaans offers a taste of life at its unspoilt best. The tour starts 40km southwest of Steytlerville, where nature has endowed the district with exceptional beauty, and it is known for its astonishing variety of semi-desert vegetation. It lies in the heartland of the mohair production area where Angora goats thrive on the natural Karoo scrub and dry climate.

The Grootrivier has its origin in the Grootrivier Mountains, north of Steytlerville, and empties in the Gamtoos River. The Poort, some 80km to the southeast, lies between the Groot Winterhoek Mountains and the Baviaanskloof Mountains, and is the northern access to the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Reserve. The Cockscomb, one of the highest peaks in the Eastern Cape, is visible in the distance for most of the time.

The spectre of drought and financial ruin are ever-present threats to Karoo farmers, which is why the few plants that can provide nutrition to livestock in times of drought are treasured. The Euphoria Esculenta (Vingerpol), a drought-resistant species and therefore a lifesaver in arid times, is once such plant, as is the Portulacaria afra (Spekboom), which is widely reintroduced into the area. This multi-branched succulent has small, juicy leaves and soft, succulent stems and is used as stock feed.

The entire route lies at the foot of the majestic Baviaanskloof Mountains in the south, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also one of the eight areas making up the Cape Floristic Region World Heritage Site.
